Glossary

Managed Funds

A managed fund is a type of unit trust where investors’ money is pooled together and used by the portfolio manager to buy investments and manage them on behalf of all investors in the fund. By pooling funds, investors can gain access to investment opportunities that they may not be able access if acting on their own.

When an investor invests in a managed fund they are assigned units proportionate to the amount of money they have invested. Managed funds can be an easy way for investors to gain access to a professionally managed portfolio of both local and global stocks.

Managed Accounts

A managed account is a portfolio of individual securities/investments managed on an investor’s behalf by a professional investment manager. The individual assets are held in the investor’s account, often on a super or investment platform, to provide control, transparency, and potential tax benefits.

Managed accounts give investors access to a range of professionally managed multi-asset investment models which can be tailored to an individual’s risk profile and wealth objectives.

In managed accounts, the investor holds the underlying asset. Not only does this provide transparency, but also control. If a client wants to exclude particular assets from a portfolio, it can be done.

Tax effectiveness is another benefit of managed accounts. Any potential tax benefits and gains are attributed to the investor.

At Clime, we provide access to professionally managed separately managed accounts (SMA) and individually managed accounts (IMA) portfolios. SMA’s are available to retail and wholesale investors whilst IMAs are available to wholesale clients.

Separately Managed Account (SMA)

An SMA or Separately Managed Account is a managed account open to both retail and wholesale investors where investment decisions are applied across all investors in the SMA. Our SMAs are held on a variety of platforms which can be accessed via a financial adviser.

Individually Managed Account (IMA)

An IMA or Individually Managed Account is a managed account open to wholesale investors only and managed to the particular objectives of each investor.
It provides the investor with flexibility and control, with the benefit of professional investment expertise.

Style and approach

Our investment Process

Combining top-down and bottom-up research.

Intensive bottom-up research is the cornerstone of our process which we supplement with top-down thematic views. Disciplined and consistently applied, we use several proprietary qualitative and quantitative techniques to scrutinise companies to uncover undervalued businesses.

We look to invest in companies with:

  • strong and reliable management
  • good profit and dividend growth expectations
  • reasonably predictable future profits and cash flows, and
  • clear business models.

Many people take enormous risk trying to outperform an index rather than consistently trying to achieve steady positive returns over the medium to longer term.
